So Horfield C reversed the drubbing they received last year from the B team. And Howard was within a whisker of extracting a draw from Mike which would have been an even more complete triumph. Truth be told the B's were missing Mike Levene in Australia as well as Prakash, Roger and Colin.

The best C team individual performance came from Alan who did well to beat Thomas. According to the website this is Thomas's first defeat of the season. Graham won fairly quickly against Angela. Andrew won soon after against Dan. Eventually Alex persuaded Ali to resign. The top two boards dragged on with eventually the white pieces emerging triumphant. (AD)

Yep, that's me, John Richards, on top board. I had a search back and the last time I played for the B's was in 1994: a draw in 17 moves against a certain David Dugdale. What goes round comes around, and I got a draw again this time, but took five moves longer - a sign of old age? Nice to play Graham again though, after many years (while I'm playing with ChessBase, I note the last encounter was 1988 and I'm distressed to say the score is now +0, =3, -1).

Anyhow, it enabled me to leave early and I missed the rest, but it looks like it was a good performance against a very decent looking Clevedon side. (JR)

Weiss and his opponent suffered mutual time trouble. An early h5-h4 by Weiss (as Black) opened up the position to his opponents advantage but he wasn't able to take advantage. Weiss then won a piece in the ensuing time scramble and his opponent resigned (perhaps prematurely).

Levene outplayed his opponent and had a clear win after sacrificing bishop for two pawns on e6. However his opponent had a mate in 3 which Levene failed to spot and was beaten. I suspect this defeat may cost him some sleep.

Gladstone was outplayed and beaten within the first hour.

Watson, as usual, outplayed his opponent and won a piece in the late middle game. With a rook on the 7th rank he announced and delivered a mate in 3. He continues his near 100% run.

Pierce played the Grunfeld and was much better prepared than his opponent. He won the exchange with a knight fork and then used his better technique to bring home an easy point.

Chatterjee played badly and was so busy thinking of an endgame, he missed an obvious win of a piece. Luckily the position simplified to a drawn knight ending. (PC)
