Division 1

29/4/2008

    Horfield A   Clifton A
1 b Steve Dilleigh ½ - ½ James Cobb
2 w Thomas Weiss 0 - 1 Andy Pickering
3 b Chris Jones ½ - ½ David Collier
4 w Phil Nendick 0 - 1 John Curtis
5 b Martin Davies 0 - 1 Gareth Morris
6 w John Richards ½ - ½ Duncan Grossett
      1½ - 4½

The last person to beat me was Duncan Grossett in April last year, so if I were to lose my unbeaten run it seemed appropriate that Duncan should be my nemesis. It should have happened, as I gave away a couple of pawns, but somehow I managed to get to a drawn R+P v R ending. Otherwise, the Clifton machine was brutally efficient and showed why they are worthy champions (JR).

Division 1

22/4/2008

    Horfield A   Downend B
1 b Steve Dilleigh 0 - 1 A Therrien
2 w Igor Nor 1 - 0 Ian Ponter
3 b Thomas Weiss 1 - 0 Geoff Taylor
4 w Phil Nendick 1 - 0 Paul Spiller
5 b Martin Davies 1 - 0 Dave Tipper
6 w John Richards 1 - 0 Default
      5 - 1

John would have extended his unbeaten run if the Downend player had dared to turn up. Igor got his revenge against Ponter, who seemed overawed by his opponent. Thomas played an excellent game to beat Taylor and Phil won a piece in the middlegame. Martin played the same variation of the Caro as he played against Spiller earlier, and again got a very strong position early on to win in 40 moves. Steve got very short of time and was down the exchange as well (MD).

Division 1

16/4/2008

    Bath A   Horfield A
1 b David Buckley ½ - ½ Igor Nor
2 w Andrew Gregory 0 - 1 Chris Jones
3 b Mauro Farina 0 - 1 Phil Nendick
4 w Joe Watson ½ - ½ Martin Davies
5 b A Sage 0 - 1 John Richards
6 w Default 0 - 1 Colin Watson
      1 - 5

First, a big thank you to Colin for agreeing to play at short notice, and a huge apology for having to ask him not to play - at even shorter notice - when Bath revealed they would be one player short.

Now, moving on to my favourite subject, me - because it is all about me, you know. I needed to avoid defeat in this match to have gone a whole year undefeated. I'm delighted to say I managed it. So since my last defeat on 17 April 2007, I have played 18, won 13, drawn 5.

And finally, the match. Chris acquired a bad bishop, but it was one more bishop than his opponent had so, bad or not, it sufficed. Martin accepted an early draw offer, and my win secured the two points. Phil looked like drawing until his opponent blundered in the ending. Igor couldn't make progress afer David Buckley found an accurate defence.

This win guarantees a third place finish (JR).

Division 1

31/3/2008

    Clevedon A   Horfield A
1 b Jon Calverley 0 - 1 Alex Easton
2 w Shane Roberts ½ - ½ Steve Dilleigh
3 b Andrew Borkowski ½ - ½ Chris Jones
4 w David Painter-Kooiman 1 - 0 Martin Davies
5 b Stuart Iles 0 - 1 John Richards
6 w Paul Golding 1 - 0 Default
      3 - 3

Phil had a last minute car incident which needed his attention, so we started off one down. Alex levelled the scores very quickly, and I soon followed to put us in the lead. Chris's game petered out to a draw, so we needed one point from the last two. Martin's position imploded, and he defended for a while with queen against two rooks and a bishop but the inevitable happened. Steve had the edge and a clock lead, but it was never quite enough. (JR)

Division 1

25/3/2008

    Downend B   Horfield A
1 b A Therren 1 - 0 Alex Easton
2 w Ian Ponter 1 - 0 Igor Nor
3 b Geoff Taylor 1 - 0 Phil Nendick
4 w Paul Spiller 0 - 1 Martin Davies
5 b Martin White 0 - 1 John Richards
6 w Dave Tipper ½ - ½ Mike Levene
      3½ - 2½

Bit of a disaster, really. Steve was unavailable, but we had a new player, Igor Nor, to step in. Igor had one of those nightmare games on his debut. Alex was two pieces up, and then it all went horribly wrong. Mine was a nice win, and Martin did well. Mike scrapped his way to a half (JR)

Division 1

4/3/2008

    Horfield A   Downend A
1 b Steve Dilleigh 0 - 1 Tyson Mordue
2 w Chris Jones ½ - ½ Hosken
3 b Phil Nendick 0 - 1 Jerry Humphreys
4 w Martin Davies 1 - 0 Mike Brigden
5 b Colin Watson 0 - 1 White
6 w John Richards 1 - 0 Default
      - 3½

Pity ... they played well, though, and deserved to win. Phil should have drawn but I was a bit lucky to beat Brigden, who was a pawn up but fell for a nasty trick. (MD)

Division 1

26/2/2008

    University A   Horfield A
1 b J Fish 0 - 1 Alex Easton
2 w J Hall 0 - 1 Steve Dilleigh
3 b A Mayhew 1 - 0 Chris Jones
4 w R Dams 0 - 1 Martin Davies
5 b Default 0 - 1 Phil Nendick
6 w Default 0 - 1 John Richards
      1 - 5

This match was switched to Horfield after the University could not get a room. I was extremely happy when they showed up two short, as I had a bad cold and my head felt like it was full of cotton wool.

The win puts us level on points with Downend A, with one match in hand, and two points behind Clifton A. (JR)

Division 1

5/2/2008

    Clifton B   Horfield A
1 b Chris Beaumont ½ - ½ Alex Easton
2 w Dominic Bennett 1 - 0 Steve Dilleigh
3 b Jim Boyce 0 - 1 Chris Jones
4 w Eddie Bromilow 0 - 1 Phil Nendick
5 b Alan Papier 0 - 1 Tom Weiss
6 w James Hennefeld 0 - 1 John Richards
      - 4½

We went 3-0 up on the bottom three boards, then had to wait to get the decisive half point. Steve only needed an extra move to deliver mate, but was under attack himself - could he survive long enough? No, he couldn't. Alex scored a good half to secure the match, and Chris ground out an ending (JR).

Division 1

15/1/2008

    Horfield A   Keynsham A
1 b Steve Dilleigh ½ - ½ Paul Helbig
2 w Chris Jones ½ - ½ Matthew Look
3 b Phil Nendick 0 - 1 Duncan Macarthur
4 w Tom Weiss 1 - 0 Andy Macrae
5 b Martin Davies 1 - 0 David Woodruff
6 w John Richards 1 - 0 Laurence Wilmshurst
      4 - 2

We avoided the embarrassment of the first half match against Keynsham (when we drew 3-3), but we're still struggling against their top three boards. Over the two matches, we lost 4½-1½ on boards 1 to 3, and won 5½-½ on the bottom three!

Time to consider prospects for the rest of the season, now we're just past the halfway stage. We're lying joint second at the moment, level with Downend A on match points, actually third as we're behind them on game points. Clifton A is 2 points ahead of us, having dropped just two drawn matches. Clifton is going to be difficult to catch; it has been averaging 4.75 game points per match (we're on 3.35) and so are huge favourites. But, as always, we'll give it a go. We play Clifton in the last match in April; there's an awfully long way to go, but I'd really like to see that be a title decider! (JR)

Division 1

7/1/2008

    Grendel A   Horfield A
1 b Derek Pugh ½ - ½ Alex Easton
2 w Simon Greely 0  -1 Steve Dilleigh
3 b O'Dell ½ - ½ Chris Jones
4 w Alistair Gilbert ½ - ½ Phil Nendick
5 b Roger Hardy ½ - ½ Tom Weiss
6 w Arthur Hibbitt ½ - ½ Martin Davies
      2½ - 3½

... The classic 5 draws and a win! (MD)

Division 1

4/12/2007

    Downend A   Horfield A
1 b Tyson Mordue 1 - 0 Alex Easton
2 w Hosken ½ - ½ Steve Dilleigh
3 b Mike Brigden ½ - ½ Chris Jones
4 w Paul Spiller 0 - 1 Phil Nendick
5 b White 0 - 1 Tom Weiss
6 w Martyn Sellars ½ - ½ Martin Davies
      2½ - 3½

A very nice two points against one of the league leaders.

Division 1

27/11/2007

    Horfield A   University A
1 b Chris Jones 0 - 1 J Fish
2 w Tom Weiss ½ - ½ R Dans
3 b Martin Davies ½ - ½ A Mayhew
4 w Colin Watson 1 - 0 T Halford
5 b Mike Levene 1 - 0 Default
6 w John Richards 1 - 0 Default
      4 - 2

We were down three of the usual players, but at least we had some reserves. University is suffering this year through trying to get a side out.

Division 1

20/11/2007

    Clifton A   Horfield A
1 b James Cobb ½ - ½ Alex Easton
2 w David Collier 1 - 0 Steve Dilleigh
3 b Andy Pickering 1 - 0 Chris Jones
4 w John Curtis ½ - ½ Phil Nendick
5 b Gareth Morris 1 - 0 Martin Davies
6 w Duncan Grossett ½ - ½ John Richards
      4½ - 1½

It's over a year since we lost a match by this margin, but we can't complain. We were outplayed on the night. I believe Steve was a tad unlucky. Alex played well right up to the wire. I offered a draw in probably a won position, balancing out my piece of luck in the previous match (JR).

Division 1

6/11/2007

    Horfield A   Clevedon A
1 b Alex Easton ½ - ½ Andrew Borkowski
2 w Steve Dilleigh ½ - ½ Jonathan Calverley
3 b Chris Jones ½ - ½ Daniel Wakeham
4 w Phil Nendick ½ - ½ Mark Calverley
5 b John Richards ½ - ½ Stuart Iles
6 w Mike Levene ½ - ½ Chris Strong
      3 - 3

Still struggling with scoring the wins and that cost us a point against one of the 'easier' sides. Full credit to Clevedon, they played extremely well and should have won this. Steve was struggling for a while, and I got offered a draw a pawn down as my opponent got worried about the clock (JR).

Division 1

23/10/2007

    Horfield A   Grendel A
1 b Alex Easton ½ - ½ Derek Pugh
2 w Steve Dilleigh ½ - ½ Simon Greely
3 b Chris Jones ½ - ½ Dave Osbourne
4 w Phil Nendick ½ - ½ Alistair Gilbert
5 b Martin Davies ½ - ½ Roger Hardy
6 w John Richards 1 - 0 Alan Harford
      3½ - 2½

A bit close ... five draws and a win give us full points, (MD)

Division 1

9/10/2007

    Horfield A   Clifton B
1 b Alex Easton 0 - 1 Chris Beaumont
2 w Steve Dilleigh ½ - ½ Huw Oliver
3 b Chris Jones 1 - 0 D Bennett
4 w Phil Nendick ½ - ½ Jim Boyce
5 b Martin Davies ½ - ½ Eddie Bromilow
6 w John Richards 1 - 0 Default
      3½ - 2½

Quite tight. Phil stood worse in my view, though he thought not, but got the draw anyway. It came down to the wire with board three the last to finish. Chris was the exchange up but Bennett had an attack and I was quite worried, but Jonesy was very cool and defended excellently. Eventually Bennett lost on time in a hopeless position. (MD)

Division 1

26/9/2007

    Keynsham A   Horfield A
1 b Paul Helbig 1 - 0 Alex Easton
2 w Matthew Look ½ - ½ Steve Dilleigh
3 b Duncan Macarthur 1 - 0 Chris Jones
4 w A Macrae ½ - ½ Phil Nendick
5 b J Kilminster 0 - 1 Martin Davies
6 w David Woodruff 0 - 1 John Richards
      3 - 3

Martin and I won by 9pm, and when we both left at 9:45 it should have been plain sailing. Alex's game looked dicey, but we would get the necessary 1.5 points from the rest - wouldn't we? Oops! A 40 points average grade difference left us with egg on our faces. (JR).

Division 1

18/9/2007

    Horfield A   Bath A
1 b Steve Dilleigh ½ - ½ David Buckley
2 w Chris Jones ½ - ½ Andrew Gregory
3 b Phil Nendick 0 - 1 Nigel Saunders
4 w Martin Davies 1 - 0 Joe Watson
5 b Mike Levene 1 - 0 R Barlow
6 w John Richards 1 - 0 Adam Stirling
      4 - 2

The fixture gods were not smiling on us. Bath in the first match was going to be tough, especially without Alex who was in Prague. Certainly, I felt very rusty, having not played a serious game for almost five months.

Chris drew early on. Phil had a rather nasty time, but the bottom three boards all went our way, giving us a comfortable looking start (JR).
