18 Jan |
It proved a bit of a
challenge to get a full cup side with most of the B team unavailable
and the Cs having a vital bottom-of-the-table clash. However by
7:30pm, 8 Horfield & Redland players were eagerly awaiting the
Nailsea team. With no sign of them by about 7:45pm, I phoned the
Nailsea secretary to see what was going on. He confirmed that
Nailsea had beaten Hanham in the previous round (most of our players
were expecting Hanham for some reason) and that he had been waiting
of news for the next round. When I explained that I didn't know
how we had been informed but that the fixture book said that the
round was due to be played this week he conceded the match.
However rather than scuttle home we made the most of the
evening by having an 8-player all-play-all 7 minute tournament.
The early rounds saw results going with seeding and the heavyweight
pairing of Steve v Alex E produced a draw in round 2. In round
3 I lost convincingly after castling into Steve's King's Indian
kingside attack. Other games went with seeding except for Alex
D taking a draw from Martin.
Things livened up in round 4: Martin beat Steve
("demolished" was the word Martin used I think), I won on
time against Alex in an ending where I was a pawn up but drawing and Alex
Dunn overturned Mike. The drama continued in round 5 with Alex
E losing on time again ("It's just as well Nailsea didn't turn
up" he was heard to say), this time a pawn up in a rook and
pawn ending against Martin. Mike held Steve to a draw.
In round 6, I needed to beat Martin to have a chance of stopping
him, despite the disadvantage of the
time-wasting-decision-making white pieces. The game petered
out into a mutual IQP ending and a draw was agreed. Elsewhere
Alex D chalked up his 3rd win in a row, although Dave was
unfortunate to lose on time in a better position. (In fact
Dave's score doesn't really do him justice as he he took a few of
his games to the wire.) Round 7 went with the seedings
and then it was finally over ("Thank goodness for that",
or words to that effect, was Howard's verdict).
The final standings were as follows (original match board position
in brackets):
1. Martin (4) - 6
2. Phil (3) - 5.5
3. Steve (1) - 5
4. Alex Easton (2) - 4.5
5. Alex Dunn (7) - 3.5
6. Mike (5) - 2.5
7. Howard (6) - 1
8. Dave (8) - 0
So congratulations to Martin who can claim the crown of H&R
blitz champion after my 28-day reign."
